J.J. Sedelmaier Productions, Inc. has periodically formed special units to satisfy the requirements of several longform productions that the studio has been involved with.
Of special note, all JJSP studio work has been done in the USA. This includes the
animation on the first season of Beavis and Butt-Head (approximately 120 minutes), the pilot episode of "Harvey Birdman - Attorney at Law" and 12 minutes of Captain Linger animation, both for Cartoon Network, 3 episodes of "Schoolhouse Rock", and all the SNL Saturday TV Funhouse cartoons done by JJSP between 1996 and 2002.
In 1992, JJSP was asked by Turner Broadcasting to help produce the in-house film used to promote the idea of a "Cartoon Network". That same year, Nickelodeon requested J.J. Sedelmaier Production's services to design, animate, and produce the package of network ID's that were used to inaugurate their "Nicktoons" block. This also included the Nicktoons logo design and the opening and closing sequence used for the block. The year 1992 also saw the studio in production on MTV's first season of "Beavis and Butt-Head". Between November of '92 and June '93, the studio completed 120 minutes of animation. A staff of 50 handled the storyboards, character design, and all animation production. JJSP brought on L.A.-based USAnimation (later VirtualMagicUSA) to handle digital ink & paint and compositing. Immediately following B&B, the studio animated 3 new episodes for the reintroduction of the educational "Schoolhouse Rock" series for ABC.
JJSP has collaborated with writer/creator Robert Smigel for over 10 years, starting with the SNL commercial parody, "Cluckin' Chicken" in 1992. In 1993 Smigel, now producer and head writer for "Late Night with Conan O'Brien", brought in JJSP to design and animate the title sequence used for the show between '92 and '96. Later that same year, Sedelmaier and Smigel paired up for their most well known creation - "The Ambiguously Gay Duo". Originally produced for the short-lived Dana Carvey Show (for which Smigel was executive producer) the AGD went on to launch "Saturday TV Funhouse" on Saturday Night Live. This highly acclaimed series of cartoons includes other Sedelmaier/Smigel creations such as, "The X-Presidents", "Fun With Real Audio", "Conspiracy Theory Rock", and "Cartoon Outtakes". In the past, Lorne Michaels, creator and executive producer of SNL has singled out the vignettes as the best things on the show. (JJSP was the exclusive production facility for the first three seasons of these films. Following that, the studio directed their attentions to other projects, but continues to selectively work on an occasional SNL project.) JJSP's association with Smigel also includes the title sequence of his "TV Funhouse" show for Comedy Central and an AGD comic strip for Playboy.
Other non-commercial alliances include: MTV, Nick@Nite, NBC, and E! network ID's, the title sequence for Comedy Central's outrageous series "Strangers With Candy" and animated shorts for "The Late Show with David Letterman", "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" and "The Colbert Report".
